Caroll Shaw warms elderly citizens

The elderly citizens were between 90 and 100.

The Caroll Shaw Memorial Centre handed out 100 blankets to elderly citizens in Randfontein and Kagiso on Friday, 20 July, to mark Mandela Day. The handover took place at the Toekomsrus Community Centre.

The elderly citizens, who were between the ages of 90 and 100, were also treated to a meal and some entertainment.

Tsholofelo Moatshe entertained the crowd with her soulful gospel voice.

Zacharia Motuang, founder of Caroll Shaw, said the initiative sought to care for elderly citizens as they are now vulnerable and need to be cared for.

Zacharia said even though this was celebrated as part of the Mandela Day festivities, the idea came about when one of the board members suggested that elderly people must be valued and cared for as their days are limited.

“He taught us that the purpose of life is to help others, and if you are not in a position to help them, then do not hurt them.

Oupa Pila, a member of the Caroll Shaw Memorial Centre speaking at the handover ceremony.

He said Mandela Day has a meaning that relates to what Caroll Shaw stands for in the community.

“It does not matter how small it is, that contribution brings satisfaction and happiness to the recipient, and that is why we saw we old ladies dancing, and showing the kind of spirit they are in.”

Among some of the partners were Food and Tree Africa, Aranda and Sassa, Rand West City Local Municipality, Kingston and King, and Rand West Brake and Clutch.
