Wawa donates to the needy and Babies Behind Bars

Wawa donated clothes to the needy in Toekomsrus as well as incarcerated mothers across SA and their babies on Mandela Day.

Women Against Women and Child Abuse (Wawa) marked Mandela Day by donating a number of clothing items to the needy community members of Toekomsrus.

“We are firstly giving back to the community seeing that it is Mandela Day and everyone is committed to doing something,” said Enrique Bhana, the coordinator at Wawa.

Enrique went on to say that the theme for the event was ‘Shopping online’ as the clothes donated were hung on a fence, so that people could simply chose the items they liked.

“We have dubbed it ‘Your-Old-Clothes-Are-New-To-Us’. This means that the stuff that people have in their homes that they do not wear any more, can be donated to our centre,” Enrique said.

He added that the leftover clothes were donated to various female prisoners and their babies across South Africa, through another project called Babies Behind Bars.

“We are packing for 17 prisons in South Africa and other Southern African countries, including Namibia, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The babies who are behind bars under the care of their jailed mothers are between the ages of 0 and 2 years,” Enrique added.
