Ten Westcol students of Mechanical and Engineering studies will soon be jetting off to Beijing in China for a year-long Integrated Work Learning Programme.
The Principal of Westcol, Louis Coetzer, said the programme will help the students to get international exposure to the industry.
“Hopefully when they come back, they will start their own businesses and contribute to the economy of South Africa by creating jobs,” he said.
He said this the very first time that funds have been allocated for this programme.
The students, who have been selected from all the campuses of Westcol, were chosen on their academic performances.
The Academic deputy principal of Westcol, Sello Mogotsi, said the programme will open many opportunities for the students, especially those studying Electrical Engineering.
“The programme will help them understand other work ethics in other countries. This is so that when they get back, they can complement international standards, because South Africa is a global country in a global economy, so it is very important that we perform at a global level,” Mogotsi said.
He said the students will benefit immensely from the programme as they often have challenges regarding placement.
“Hopefully, they will be able to encourage other students and open up opportunities for others,” Mogotsi said.
Coetzer said, “I am very glad they have this opportunity, because it does not come every day. They are going to break ground for others like them.” He said the institution is proud as the learners are a part of a few selected groups in South Africa to undergo the programme. Learners will board their flight on Friday 29 June. The Integrated Work Learning Programme is funded by the Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA).
