Killers get life for Titus’ 2014 murder

Four men sentenced for the murder of Lucky Titus in 2014.

Four men have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Lucky Titus four years ago.

The sentence was handed down in the South Gauteng High Court recently.

Titus’ death sparked outrage in Mohlakeng during late 2014. He went missing on 27 October and his body was found on a railway in Carletonville just over a week later.

Shea Alloysius JB Phate, 43, Mlungisi Emmanuel Peter, 41, Andrew Motubatsi, 44, and Benton Lawu, 30, were found guilty on all the charges. They were subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment on the murder charges and an additional 18 years imprisonment each for attempted murder, kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice.

“Judge Mokgoatlheng was presiding while Advocate Narissa Muller was prosecuting on behalf of the State. The case was investigated by Warrant Officer Santie le Roux-Laufs of the West Rand Trio Task team. The men will effectively serve life imprisonment,” said Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson.

Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, the Randfontein Police station commander lauded all the parties involved in concluding the case and ensuring that justice was served.

“Your efforts should bring closure to the bereaved family of the late Lucky Titus. Your dedication and commitment in seeing justice prevails are commended,” said the Brigadier.
