#Mother’sDay: How to spoil mom in nine provinces

How to spoil your mom in every one of South Africa’s 9 provinces this Mother’s Day ...

Most of us owe a lot to our moms. Without them, we literally wouldn’t be here today.

They fed us, clothed us, made sure we got to all our extramural events and helped us through every major milestone in our lives.

While all of us know we should show our appreciation to our moms every day, that’s not always possible. As a result, when Mother’s Day rolls around, we feel like we need to put in the extra effort.

That can feel stressful, especially as the day draws closer and you have no idea what you’re going to do. Fortunately, there are an array of events across South Africa’s nine provinces which are sure to have you in mom’s good books for a good while.

• Gauteng — Johannesburg Zoo Mother’s Day Concert

On 13 May, the Johannesburg Zoo will celebrate all mothers with its annual Mother’s Day concert.

As well as musical performances, the concert will feature animal tours and a kiddies’ area, giving mom the chance to sit back, relax, and enjoy the music. Artists include The Soil and Lunga Mavusa.

Concert tickets will be available at Webtickets (https://www.webtickets.co.za/event)

• Eastern Cape — Mother’s Day Picnic at 2 Swans Wedding Farm

If you’re looking for a way to treat mom and benefit charity at the same time, the Mother’s Day Picnic at the 2 Swans Wedding Farm near East London is a great option.

Entry to the event, which is in aid of the Eyabantwana Trust, costs R250 for a double ticket (entry for two adults including a basket for two) and R125 for a single ticket (entry for one adult including a basket for one).

Entrance for children is free.

• Free State — Mother’s Day Lunch at De Oudekraal

Situated on a working sheep farm just outside Bloemfontein, De Oudekraal is a country estate and spa which also offers gourmet dining, which will be on full display at its Mother’s Day Buffet lunch.

• KwaZulu-Natal — Mother’s Day Lunch at The Oyster Box

When it comes to finding a lavish way to spoil mom in Durban, it’s hard to beat the Mother’s Day Lunch Special at The Oyster Box.

The lunch features a plated starter, buffet main course, and a plated dessert.

• Limpopo — Mother’s Day Lunch at Tzaneen Country Lodge

The garden city of Tzaneen is frequently used as a stop-over by people travelling to the Kruger National Park, but also has plenty of attractions of its own.

If you’re in town during the Mother’s Day weekend, it’s worth booking a spot at the Mother’s Day Lunch at the Tzaneen Country Lodge.

• Mpumalanga — Sappi Mother’s Day Concert

Held annually at the Lowveld Botanical Garden in Nelspruit, the Sappi Mother’s Day Concert will feature musical performances as well as a gourmet food market.

Headlining this year’s concert is Elvis Blue, with Refentse Morake as the opening act.

Tickets will be on sale from Computicket. Entry is free for pre-schoolers, while primary school learners and pensioners pay R45. All other tickets cost R85. The day’s proceeds will be donated to the Lowveld National Botanical Garden for conservation development projects.

• North West — Mother’s Day High Tea at The Palace

There’s nothing like a high tea to make your mom feel special. Except maybe an African high tea at Sun City’s The Palace.

Held in collaboration with Amarula Cream, the High Tea takes place in the hotel’s Crystal Court and features a lavish selection of pastries, sandwiches, and other treats.

• Northern Cape — Mother’s Day Lunch with Jan Rhaap @ The Kimberley Club

If you’re in Kimberley this Mother’s Day, then you can treat your mom to a lunch at The Kimberly Club.

Providing the soundtrack to the lunch will be Afrikaans singer Jan Rhaap, who grew up on a farm in the Northern Cape, meaning he’s bound to get some local love.

• Western Cape — Mother’s Day at the Clay Cafe

Sometimes treating your mom means engaging in a day of creativity with her. One of the best places to do that in Cape Town is at Hout Bay’s Clay Cafe.

A great venue throughout the rest of the year, there’s extra incentive to go this Mother’s Day.
