Tremor at Sibanye Mine kills four
Four killed, two still unaccounted for following a seismic incident at Sibanye-Stillwater's Masakhane Mine between Carletonville and Westonaria.
Four people are confirmed to have died following a seismic incident at Sibanye-Stillwater’s Masakhane Mine between Carletonville and Westonaria on the West Rand.
A media statement released by James Wellsted, Head of Investor Relations, Sibanye-Stillwater, reported that 10 of the 13 employees who were trapped on 3 May following a seismic event (measuring 2.2 on the Richter Scale) at its Masakhane Mine Driefontein operation have now been freed.

“Four of the ten have since succumbed to their injuries, while another six employees are still in hospital. Another employee has been located, but two employees remain unaccounted for.
Wellsted’s statement reads as follows: “The Management of Sibanye-Stillwater wishes to express its sincere condolences to friends and family of the four deceased employees.
“We thank everyone involved in the rescue operations since yesterday, especially the ‘proto’ rescue teams and other stakeholders, who are continuing to make every effort to locate and free the remaining unaccounted for employees. Operations at the Masakhane shaft have been suspended.”
He said a further update will be provided when more information is available.
