Charity golf event honours late Ben Diale

There was plenty of support for the annual Ben Diale Memorial Charity Golf Day, all in the name of charity.

Numerous golfers gave it their all on the course but in the end it was all in the name of charity when the annual Ben Diale Memorial Charity Golf Day took place at the Randfontein Country Club on Friday, 23 March.

The cause? Purchasing uniforms and shoes for needy schoolchildren in Mohlakeng.

Organisers said they were overwhelmed with the turn-out of golfers.

“I was overwhelmed with the turn-out of golfers, some coming from as far afield as the Vaal, Soweto, Ekurhuleni and Midrand. Women and white golfers also supported the event,” said Dr Manyane Diale, son of the late Ben Diale.

Ben is popularly known in Mohlakeng as ‘Oom’ Ben Diale. He was the brains behind the Diale Funeral Parlour back in 1961. It is said he was the first black man to open up such an operation. He played a role as community leader and member of the then Mohlakeng Native Advisory Board, which he later resigned from, and went on to join the African National Congress (ANC). He was an active ballroom dancer, actor and conductor at St Paul’s Anglican Church, and his stage craft and repertoire thrilled both adjudicators and audience. Golf was also one of his passions, which is why his son, Dr Manyane, saw it fit to honour him through the golf tourney and function.

Several prominent figures and personalities were involved on the day, including Donald Ace Khuse, former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana legend. He won the event for the second time with a score of 40 points, and was closely followed by Hugh Phokojoe and Sfiso Motsa.

Velda Fort was the winner of the women’s section with 37 points. She also managed the longest drive at Hole 17. In second spot was Eunice Lesejane, followed by Mono Ramagaga.
