Local falls victim to ATM scam

Something had been jammed inside the FNB ATM near the Greenhills Spar.

A Greenhills woman lost R3 000 on the morning of Thursday, 5 April, in an ATM scam.

The victim, who did not want to be named, said it was 7am when she realised her money was missing from her bank account.

“I got to the FNB ATM near the Greenhills Spar and tried to insert my bank card into the machine but realised that there was something jammed in the card slot. I could not withdraw any money, so I went to the Nedbank ATM instead.”

She said as she was going to the other ATM, she saw a suspicious-looking silver VW Polo that had apparently been following her.

“The Polo parallel parked behind my car to block it. After inserting my card into the machine and punching in the PIN, a man suddenly came between me and the ATM, and pressed a button on the ATM.” she said.

The victim said two minutes after the man pressed the button, she received a notification on her cellphone, alerting her to the missing money.

“I opened the notification, and discovered that R3 000 had been withdrawn from my account,” the victim added.

The victim said the matter is currently being investigated by the police.
