Big West Rand rugby derby this Saturday!

It's Teine vs Poorte this Saturday, 7 April, and it's going to be a mouthwatering spectacle for West Rand rugby fans.

Randfontein Rugby Club (Teine) will be facing off against their age-old rivals Roodepoort Rugby Club (Poorte) on Saturday, 7 April.

It is set to be a mouthwatering spectacle for West Rand rugby fans. Bulls vs Stormers, All Blacks vs Wales, England vs France, Hurricanes vs Crusaders, and Reds vs Waratahs are all some of the fiercest and most hard-fought rivalries in professional rugby.

While the quality of the rugby on show at club level might not live up to that on display at a professional level, the rivalry between local clubs will always be among the toughest, and Poorte vs Teine is by no means an exception to the rule.

These two clubs have been doing battle for as long as West Rand rugby fans can remember, and this year the competition between the two sides looks set to be the toughest in a while.

Teine has dominated the fi xture in recent years, walking off as victors for two years running. However, Poorte has apparently been reborn this year under new head coach, Alwyn Hollenbach, playing a style of rugby that can be likened to that displayed by the Golden Lions – for whom Alwyn played professionally.

Alwyn himself is certainly looking forward to what looks set to be a tough day out this weekend.

“I seriously can’t wait for the game. If I could, I’d cut the grass tomorrow and tell the guys to come play,” said an excited Alwyn.

Alwyn and his troops have had a great start to their 2018 season managing to win pre-“Everybody’s working really hard, and we really want to snag the win for all Poorte’s supporters.”

George Smith, one of the Teine coaches, is also thrilled at the thought of the matchup.

“A lot of friends will be playing against each other, and it is going to be one hell of a game,” he said.

“It’s always a game that is heavily contested and I know that I cannot wait for Saturday to come.”

The two West Rand giants will each have five sides locking horns on Saturday, some at Ruimsig Stadium and the others at Allen Glen High School. The U/19s will clash at 1.15pm, with the U/21 game set to follow at 2.40pm at the school.

The games at Ruimsig will be kicked off by the third teams at 1.15pm, followed by the second teams at 2.40pm, and fi nally the fi rst teams at 4pm.

Make sure you don’t miss out on a day of family fun that is set to be one to remember.
