Fifteen stolen goats recovered, police warn farmers

Police are looking for an unknown number of suspects after 15 stolen goats were recovered.

Bekkersdal Police have recovered 15 goats that were stolen from a plot in Zuurbekom a few days ago.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said, “It is alleged that a 57-year-old stock owner was awoken by her son at about 3pm on Sunday, 18 March. He told her about the theft and the matter was reported to the Bekkersdal Police.

“Constable Deon Mbhalati, a member of the Stock Theft Unit immediately responded to the case and together with Constable Godfrey Thobejane, a Rural Safety officer, the victim formed a team and started searching for her stock around the Bekkersdal area.

The victim then spotted one of her goats with a specific marking at the entrance to Bekkersdal. The team followed the goat, which led them to 14 other goats grazing in an open veld without anyone tending them.”

Bekkersdal Police are appealing to the public to assist with information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators who are still at large.

Colonel Abraham Nkhwashu, the Bekkersdal Police station commander appeals to stock owners to ensure that their stock have distinctive markings.

“It is easier to track and trace them,” he added.
