Five get 49 years for murder, robbery

Five men, arrested in Bekkersdal, were sentenced to a total of 49 years behind bars for a murder and robbery they committed last year.

Five young men accused of murder and robbery have been convicted and sentenced in the Carletonville Magistrates’ Court in Oberholzer.

A total of 49 years’ imprisonment was handed down to the teenagers who were arrested in Bekkersdal.

Gideon Skulu, 19, was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment; Joseph Nkaona, 18, to 10 years; a 16-year-old (whose name cannot be mentioned as he is a minor) to four years; Philimon Mhlongo, 19, to 10 years and Jeremiah Kalaote, 19, was sentenced 10 years’ imprisonment.

According to Constable Elsie Tshonte, Fochville Police spokesperson, “It was alleged that on 3 March 2017 the victim, a Mr Dlamini was found in pool of blood after being brutally stabbed to death. During this incident in Kokosi the victim was also robbed of his cellphone.

“Warrant Officer Solomon Ramulondo was assigned to investigate the case and was assisted by helpful community members.

During the investigation Ramulondo traced the stolen cellphone, and the person who had it took him to the people who had given it to him. The suspects were subsequently arrested in Bekkersdal.”

Lieutenant Colonel IP Matamela, the Fochville Police station commander applauded the investigating officer for all this hard work to secure the sentences.
