Safety tips to prevent deadly listeriosis

Here are some ways to prevent the spread of listeria, the bacteria that cause listeriosis.

Since the outbreak of listeriosis people have started doubting the safety of their food.

Here are some ways to prevent the spread of listeria, the bacteria that cause listeriosis.

Always wash your hands before handling and while preparing food. Always wash your hands after using the toilet.

All surfaces and equipment used when preparing food should be clean and sanitised. Separate raw and cooked food, and separate raw meat, poultry and seafood from other foods.

Use separate equipment and utensils such as knives and cutting boards for handling raw foods. Store food in containers to prevent contact between raw and prepared foods.

Cook food thoroughly, especially meat, chicken, eggs and seafood. Bring foods like soups and stews to the boil and then refrigerate it promptly (all cooked and perishable food.)

Use safe water or treat it to make it safe. Buy fresh and wholesome foods.

Choose foods processed for safety, such as pasteurised milk. Wash fruits and vegetables, especially if eaten raw and do not use food beyond its expiry date.
