A set of parents in Mohlakeng are still reeling in shock after two men attempted to rob their son with a machete-like object earlier this week.
One of the attackers managed to escape after members of the community ran out to help the victim. The visibly distressed victim, who is now going for counselling after the ordeal, said he fought off the men with every bit of strength he had in him and screamed at the top of his lungs for help.
He said one man pulled out a machete-like object, while another man held him to the ground – grabbing him by his throat.

“I was leaving my house for school and immediately after walking away from the gate, the two men walked in my direction and one of them grabbed me. I thought the guys were ready to take my life. I was very scared,” the victim said.
He said that during the attack he managed to gather all his courage and strength to fight the men off.
“Something in me just gave me all the strength to fight for my life. After pushing off the guy who was strangling me, I screamed very loud for my mother to help me.”
His mother, who was still in her pyjamas and barefoot, came running out of the yard to her son’s aid, said: “I was getting ready for work when I heard my son screaming outside. Immediately after getting to the gate, I saw two men running away. I thought they had seriously injured him.
“I ran after them, screaming for the whole community to help catch them.”
She said members of the community helped by catching one of the attackers.
“Unfortunately, his accomplice got away,” the mother said.
She said even though the police arrested one of the attackers, she now fears for the safety of her family. She said the whole experience was very bad for her son as he is now unstable and cannot sleep.
“My son has been deeply affected by this – he is constantly in fear,” she added.
Randfontein Police are currently investigating the case.
