Joining hands at infamous house
"This house is a new beginning for Randfontein residents."
The property at 41 Henning Street, notorious for being a drug and prostitution hot spot, is soon to become a haven of hope.
On Saturday, 10 February, Barend Kotzé, 26, from non-profit organisation (NPO) Ekklesia Equipping Ministries launched the Hope Foundation Project when the community came out in their numbers to help restore and renovate the neglected property.
“This house is a new beginning for Randfontein residents who are called upon to open up their hearts towards this project to help fix 41 Henning Street so that people’s lives can be built up – for their own sake but most importantly, for God’s Kingdom,” he said.
Barend, who had been hard at work since before 8am on Saturday, said Ekklesia Equipping Ministries was extremely thankful for everyone who gave up time during the weekend to do good in the community. It was a very hot day, but that did not stand in the way of the residents who put in a lot of effort to clean the premises.

Yvonne and Dana from Skip on the Go sponsored the waste bins. Baba Dippenaar from 153 Ministries in Elandsvlei brought delicious food and cold drinks for everybody. Zunique Jacobs, 3, a finalist in the Toddler and Tween of the World competition, was also there to lend a helping hand. People even came from Westonaria, Luipaarsdvlei and Krugersdorp to pitch in.
Members of the The Army of God also worked very hard.
The following people also joined in to help: Sonja, Hendrik, Chloe and Sashe van den Heever, Corne and Hennie van Staden, Elsa and Hennie Marais, Jaco Dikenson, Gertjie Simpson, Dillen Theron, Elsje du Toit, Calvin Dickens, Annique and Zunique Jacobs, Adri Krügel, Linn-Marie Marais, Herman van Dyk, Ruan Erasmus, Wessel Lourens, Esmarelda van Dyk, Chonè, Gerhard, Anjanka and Gerhard (junior) Barnard, Baba Dippenaar, Denise Pieterse, Thethiwe Magdeline Makholoza, Juries Smangaliso Makholoza, Theuns Botes, Ruben Bula, Ronald Lowole, Christopher Sibanda and Phillip Mooke.
Barend appealed to the community to also support the raffle Ekklesia is running, aimed at collecting funds to support their efforts to rebuild and renovate the house. Tickets for a chance to win a Travel Billow – a blanket and pillow in one – for a boy or girl sell at one for R20 or three for R50. The name of the winner will be drawn on 2 March.
