The Westonaria Borwa Mega Project, where several Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) houses have been and are being built, is a concern to a Westonaria resident.
The Herald accompanied ‘Kevin’ (he asked that he remain anonymous), who has been in the building industry and a resident of Westonaria for 30 years, to the developing site.

‘Kevin’ firstly pointed out that the concrete slabs that have been laid there do not provide safe foundations for a house.

The slabs have simply been laid on the sand, and erosion is already starting to eat at them after the recent rains. He is worried about the quality of the concrete that has been used, and also about the fact that the outside walls of the houses consist of only one layer of bricks.

“Two layers of bricks should be used for the outside walls,” ‘Kevin’ said. He then pointed out that one wall had been built skew. “If houses are built on those slabs, one little earthquake would cause them to collapse on the residents that will live there.”
He also mentioned that the brick walls that are being built on the inside of the houses, are not embedded as they should be.
