Star athletes off to City of Tshwane

Three young star athletes from Mohlakeng are off to the City of Tshwane to further their education.

Three promising young athletes from the Mohlakeng-based Boabab Athletics Club are heading up north to Tshwane.

They are Vuyo Rayi, Bokang Mabote and Omphile Thwala.

According to Ofentse Ntibane, the club chairman and coach, the three are moving to Tshwane Prestige College to further their education.

Vuyo was a learner at Bulelani Primary School, Bokang was at Sedimosang and is the rose amongst the thorns. Omphile attended Mohlakeng Primary School.

Ofentse emphasised there was no way he could stand in the way of the kids’ educational future.

“Despite athletics, the kids do have an educational future to fulfill, and sport and education supplement each other. We have a good working relationship with Prestige College, and this is not the first time we’ve worked together in this regard. We have other athletes such as Lerato Diratsagae and Mathapelo Mavuso who have been there since 2017.

“The education system at Prestige is not the same as in the public schools and entails a five-year scholarship, but even if the learner fails, he or she is given another chance to study further.

However, neither we, nor the college, can supply the tablets that the kids need to further their studies, so we’re appealing for a good Samaritan to help us with a donation.”

He added that the departure of the athletes will leave not leave a gap in the club as there is an abundance of athletes in the Rand West townships of Mohlakeng and Bekkersdal that need to be developed.
