A 40-year-old man has been arrested in Bekkersdal after he was found in possession of an illegal firearm as well as ammunition during the weekend.
“At about 11.15pm on Saturday, 20 January, police Constables Zuko Mpatwa and Siyabonga Shange were conducting their routine stop-and-search operations when they spotted a suspicious-looking man. They alleged that the male changed his direction when he noticed the police marked vehicle. They approached him and requested to search him. They found a firearm with a filed off serial number tucked into his waistband.
The suspect was unable to produce a licence and he also failed to account for being in possession of this firearm.
“He was arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, “said Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson.

Colonel Abraham Nkhwashu, Bekkersdal Police station commander, was very pleased with the recovery and thanked the members for a job well done.
“This indicates that we can combat crime by merely doing stop-and-search operations on both vehicles and pedestrians,” he added.
