Why the Westcol protests?

The group is peaceful and no major traffic issues have been encountered – Captain Appel Ernst.

About 300 prospective students gathered at the Westcol Office Park on Johnstone Street early on Wednesday before they started their protest march. They could allegedly not be accommodated by the college.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson confirmed, “The Further Education and Training (FET) facility indicated that they cannot accommodate these students.”

The Randfontein community groups started asking questions on social media from early this morning and residents were warned to avoid Lazaar Avenue and Arend Street.

On some groups the public was advised to avoid Tambotie Mall and Main Road as students were allegedly throwing objects at cars. The students moved from the college to the administration offices to have their concerns addressed.

But, Ernst assured, “The group is peaceful and no major traffic issues have been encountered. Randfontein Police, Public Order Policing and Rapid Response (RR) members are monitoring the situation.”

At about 11am, when the Herald asked prospective students sitting on the pavement in front of Westcol College a few questions, they all seemed confused. Some of them did not take part in the march, although all of them seemed disappointed, some even angry.
