Non-functional traffic lights on our to do list — Municipality

Municipality admits "a lot of traffic lights not functioning".

The Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) will be undertaking a comprehensive programme of addressing all non-functional traffic lights.

After several accidents at the infamous the R28/ R41 intersection, among the most recent ones a fatal crash in December and another one this month already, the traffic light now poses even more danger since most days it either does not function properly, or not at all.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson, confirmed the many fatal accidents and that with the heavy traffic the R28 carries, the problematic traffic light is a great threat to motorists.

At least two people sustained minor injuries when a light motor vehicle and a bakkie collided in the middle of the intersection early on Wednesday morning 3 January. The exact cause of the collision is unknown. The bakkie was badly damaged and both vehicles were towed away at about 8am. Motorists had to take extra care as the road was littered with debris.

In December, a man was killed and several others injured when a light motor vehicle and a bakkie collided at the same intersection.

The Herald asked Tshidiso Thlaripe, spokesperson for the RWCLM Executive Mayor, Mzi Khumalo for comment.

“The Rand West City Local Municipality recently encountered a lot of traffic lights not functioning. This was informed by the lightning which affected the electronic cards,” Thlaripe said.

Thlaripe added that municipal workers were at the intersection, attending to the problem. The municipality will be undertaking a comprehensive programme of addressing all non-functional traffic lights.
