UPDATE: New pipes to fix the problem

Additional contractors had to be called in to fix the pipe.

Residents in parts of Randfontein were left with no water for more than 24 hours last weekend. On Friday, 24 November, at approximately 3pm, a contractor hit the water pipe-line on Freda Avenue, Homelake. The pipe feeds the Greenhills water tower.

“The contractors were busy putting a new pipe in to assist the storm-water drainage in the area,” said ward councillor, Craig Harrison.

A lot of water gone to waste.

The contractors first had to drain the pipe before they could switch off the water supply, leaving the residents of Greenhills, Homelake, Helikonpark, Culemborgpark, Eikepark and parts of Toekomsrus and Mohlakeng with little to no water.

In the early hours of Saturday, 25 November, new pipes were supplied to fix the problem.

Harrison told the Herald that additional contractors had to be called in to fix the pipe. He added that the new pipes were put in and the team monitored the water levels until they were satisfied that they could switch the pumps on. Residents had water at approximately 5 pm.

“I am going to follow up with the municipality and ask who is going to pay for the millions of litres of water that went to waste.

A lot of water gone to waste.

My other question will be who will pay for the work and material that were used to fix the problem,” said Harrison.

Harrison would like to apologise to the residents for the inconvenience caused during the time. He also would like to remind them not to switch their geysers on if there is no water supply, as doing so this might damage the geyser.
