Nkosinathi Qolo, 39, also known as Bongani was convicted and sentenced in the Westonaria Regional Court on 30 October to an effective 15 years’ imprisonment for murder.
His 38-year-old victim was murdered on the afternoon of 16 December last year.
“It is alleged that the victim arrived at a local tavern in Tambo section to collect his wife. His wife told him she wanted to finish her drink and he agreed.
They were both about to leave when they were approached by a man they both knew. The man assaulted the victim’s wife with open hands without saying a word,” said Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson.
When the victim tried to intervene, the man stabbed him multiple times with a knife. He was taken to Leratong Hospital where he later died of the injuries he sustained.

A case of murder was opened at the Bekkersdal Police and the next day the suspect was traced and arrested by Sergeant Mike Poonyane and Constable Sibusisov Nyawowith with the community’s help.
He was charged with murder and assault, and denied bail. Based on investigations led by detective Sergeant Hendrik Moiloa, he was convicted and sentenced.
Colonel Abraham Nkhwashu, the Bekkersdal Police station commander welcomed the sentence and applauded the police members for a job well done.
He also thanked the community for the information that had led to the arrest. “Working hand in hand with the police could reduce crime around our communities,” he added.
