Alleged illegal miner shot dead

One of three alleged illegal miners shot dead in the vicinity of Randfonein. Police are investigating the murder.

The Randfontein Police are urgently requesting assistance after two people were shot and the other person who was with them, escaped while on their way to an illegal mining site. The incident occurred in the vicinity of Cooke Plant on the R559 in Randfontein.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson, “It is alleged that at about 7.45am on Monday, 30 October the two victims were on their way to conduct illegal mining. They were in the company of a third person. Upon their approaching the area where they allegedly wanted to conduct illegal mining, they were suddenly confronted. They were both shot and sustained head injuries.

One victim died on the scene while the second had to be transported to a nearby hospital. The third person managed to escape and he informed the authorities of the incident.”

She said the Randfontein Police would appreciate any information regarding this brutal attack that would help them to trace and apprehend the attackers, who will be charged with murder and attempted murder. The police also requested that illegal mining activities in the area be reported to them.
