Man scammed out of money by phone

Local police urge public to refrain from giving personal info over the phone.

Bekkersdal Police have launched a manhunt after an undisclosed amount of money was fraudulently transferred from a victim’s bank account.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said earlier in October, the victim received a call on his cellphone. The caller asked him to confirm his phone number as someone wanted to do a SIM swap on his number.

“He gave the number and was surprised to find that his money had been withdrawn from his account. He reported the matter to the police and a case of fraud was registered. The suspects are still unknown.”

Anyone with information that could assist the police in solving this matter may contact the Bekkersdal Police on 011 755 0000/ 1/ 2/ 6, alternatively contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
