DA demand: Cancel ward officer appointments

The DA and the community of Randfontein are unhappy about the municipality who "has been appointing ward officers".

The Democratic Alliance Rand West met with many of the residents of the Rand West Municipality in front of the municipal building on Monday 11 September to hand over a letter of demand and let their voices be heard.

According to a member of the National Council of Provinces, Jacques Julius MP, the municipality has been appointing ward officers and both the DA and the community of Randfontein are unhappy about this state of affairs.

Member of the NCOP, Jacques Julius MP, addressing the gathering.

The DA has demanded that the Rand West Local Municipality and the Speaker of Council immediately cancel the appointment of these ward officers.

“There is enough reason to believe that ANC cadres were appointed as ward officers, some even being ANC candidates that lost in their wards during the 2016 Local Government Elections,” said Jacques.

An advertisement for these positions went out to the public, who applied and spent their own money going for interviews, only to find that the ANC knew all along who they wanted to employ in the positions.

“This shows total disregard for the unemployed youth in Rand West,” said Jacques.

Deputy Federal Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance and Member of the Provincial Legislature, Makashule Gana, addressed the crowd, saying that South

Africa belongs to everyone.

MMC Sipho Matakane.

“This country does not belong to some, it must belong to all,” said Gana.

The DA participated peacefully, and addressed Jeje Legoete, the Member of the Mayoral Council for Public Safety and the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Human Settlements, Sipho Matakane and the community about the issue.

“When I hear that people are appointed in this municipality not because they can do the job, but because they know the MMC and the Mayor, then I feel that I must come and stand with the people, because you must always be on the side of the people,” said Gana.

He added that anyone who is appointed and does not qualify for the job is not standing with the people. The DA feels that the municipality should work for the community and carry the community’s interest at heart.

Both MMC Legoete and Matakane signed the demand.

The DA has demanded a response within seven days.
