Man armed with screwdriver targets house

Community members assisted in the arrest of a suspect armed with screwdriver following an attempted house robbery in Westonaria.

A 23-year-old man armed with a screwdriver was arrested by members of the public following a house robbery in Begonia Street in Westonaria.

Warrant Officer Raymond Sebonyane, Westonaria police spokesperson said the incident took place on Tuesday, 29 August.

He said, “It is alleged the victim was in his bedroom when he heard a banging on the door. He went to investigate and suddenly met an unknown male inside the house. The man was armed with a screwdriver.

“The armed suspect allegedly demanded money and a cellphone. The complainant manage to run out of the house and get help. By the time the Westonaria Police arrived, the suspect had already been apprehended by the community. The suspect is currently being detained in the Westonaria Police cells.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates Court soon.
