Mandela Day celebrations kick off in Toekies
The WRDM kicked off its Mandela Week activities yesterday by treating 200 elderly residents in Toekomsrus.
The West Rand District Municipality (WRDM) kicked off its Mandela Week activities on Monday,17 July, by treating 200 elderly residents at the Toekomsrus Town Hall.
Boyce Maneli, WRDM Executive Mayor, Selina “Mummy” Moumakwe, acting Executive Mayor of the Rand West City Local Municipality and Patrick Lipudi, newly elected Executive Mayor of Mogale City attended the celebration alongside many other important guests.
WRDM in partnership with Ntirhisano (an outreach programme that provides a platform for government in the Gauteng City Region to assess service delivery and engage with residents to help them resolve their challenges) hosted the event.
Mayor Maneli delivered a message of hope and added some humour to the celebration. The theme of his speech was: ‘Take action, inspire change’.
We should not let our towns die down. We must grow,” he said.
Sibanye Gold sponsored each guest with a warm blanket while the WRDM and Bonang Masikule Shoe Manufacturers donated 120 pairs of school shoes to be distributed to schools in the West Rand. Sibanye Gold managed to get a total of 1 070 blankets to be distributed as the week’s celebrations continue.
Each guest also received a colourful bag with refreshments and were entertained by outstanding performances by cultural dancers, a choir and a poet. Maneli and the oldest citizen of Toekomsrus, Mita Senzeni Ndebele, 109, also cut the Mandela birthday cake together.
Lunch was also provided to the elderly and a tree planting initiative also was conducted.
International Mandela Day celebrations will take place until Friday, 21 July.
