SA name change? You must be joking

They are asking for the public's opinion and here's mine ...

Just when you think it is going to be an ordinary week, life throws you a curve ball.

This time the ball comes from government, after Nathi Mthethwa, the Minister of Arts and Culture, thought it would be a good idea to start a discussion on changing the name of the country.

They are asking for the public’s opinion, and here’s mine …

First of all, for what reason? Secondly, what about the costs involved in pulling off such a stunt, considering we have already been downgraded to junk status and are in a recession. Where is the money gonna come from? Thirdly, what will the new name be? Fourthly, how would Nelson Mandela feel about it? Fifthly, why would you want to change the name anyway?

These are serious questions running through my head, alongside the question of whether there isn’t perhaps another more important issue already facing the country, one more important than a name change.

Think of it this way: Should the name-change become a reality, would you be proud to be called a ‘Rainbow African’ or ‘Guptopian’ instead of a South African?

After many centuries, the rest of world still doesn’t even know where South Africa is. Just ask yourself, Mthethwa, is this really worth it?

How do you feel about the name change and what would you like the new name to be? Let us know by sending an email to randfonteinherald@caxton.co.za.
