Sasco declares war on criminals and women abusers

Away with the gender-based violence and rape culture – South African Students Congress in Gauteng declares war.

The South African Students Congress (https://www.sasco.org.za/) in Gauteng declared war on criminals and women abusers earlier this week.

“We have noted with great concern the growing trend of violence aimed at students and women in particular. Students live in fear as they walk to and from their campuses because they are targeted by inhuman creatures who prey on them, especially on the defenseless females who walk alone from campus at night and during the day,” the organisation said.

They called on students to unite and reclaim their communities from “these thugs” and make a safe environment for students to be in.

“It is everyone’s responsibility to keep our communities safe and friendly. We call on our society to remember and practice our African values, which prioritise Ubuntu. We are the future of this country, therefore the killing of students will not be tolerated at any point. South Africans must unite and ensure that we are a rainbow nation that loves and appreciates each other.

“Women’s bodies are not commodities and no body part is worth selling or killing for. We call on the authorities to increase police visibility in our communities and urge the police to guard us as they do with buildings of universities which already have enough bouncers. We demand that the police be deployed as it has been proven beyond reasonable doubt that private security companies have failed to keep us safe. We are robbed, raped, trafficked and killed on a daily basis under their watch. Failure to comply with this request will leave students with no other option than to mobilise themselves and take it upon themselves to clean up our streets, which we are more than capable of doing.

“We will not tolerate the abductions and killings of our students in Gauteng. We call on the communities to be more vigilant and actively participate in ensuring that we make Gauteng a safer province to live in. We must root out all the social ills which have been normalised by patriarchy in our society and reject these abnormalities.”
