Cops catch car thieves within minutes

Cops catch car thieves before owner even reports crime.

Bekkersdal — Two men thought they could get away with stealing a vehicle during the early hours of the morning, but they couldn't fool the Bekkersdal Police.

Police officers came across two suspects of about 28 and 38 years old respectively who were towing a vehicle at approximately 3am on Wednesday, 10 May in Simunye Extension 1.

The officers were conducting their routine patrols in the area when they spotted the men. They were not satisfied with the reason the men gave for towing a vehicle so early in the morning, and after a preliminary investigation, they realised the vehicle was stolen. However, it was not reported as such at the time.

“The two suspects were immediately arrested and will be charged with motor-vehicle theft and being in possession of a stolen vehicle,” Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said.

The suspects were expected to appear in court within the next 48 hours, she explained.

“This arrest might help us solve other cases of this nature, specifically in Simunye,” Colonel Mbangwa Nkhwashu, station commander of the Bekkersdal Police said.
