Randfontein Police Station Commander calls for calm after a man beat his girlfriend to death with a crowbar during the weekend.

Brigadier Mashole Manamela, the Randfontein Police’s station commander, has called on the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands after a man beat his girlfriend to death with a crowbar on Sunday.

It is said that at about 11.48am on Sunday, 7 May, an argument between a couple who were in a relationship ended brutally in the Siyahlala informal settlement in Brandvlei.

The couple’s argument allegedly turned violent and the man used a crowbar to bludgeon his female companion to death.

Upon learning of this brutal murder, residents in the vicinity allegedly tracked the suspect down and seriously assaulted him. He was later taken into custody by members of the Randfontein Police when they arrived on the scene.

Manamela accompanied the Rand West City Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Mzi Khumalo, to the incident scene to address the community.

Brigadier Manamela made a heartfelt plea to the 300 community members to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

“Violence can never be the answer, let justice prevail by apprehending the criminal element and handing them over to the South African Police. Do not resort to counter-attacks, it will not solve anything,” he said.

“The suspect received medical attention and is expected to appear in court soon,” said Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police’s spokesperson.
