In one of Randfontein’s most looked-after suburbs is a beautiful house, probably worth at least a R1 million, slowly being flooded with sewage. The house is next to a family home and daycare centre on Aloe Street, Greenhills.
According to Naomi de Beer, who lives next to the home, they have been battling with the awful smell since February. She said the drain at the front of the property, located close to Naomi’s kitchen, has been overflowing with raw sewage. She said the smell gets to bad, they can’t stand being in their own kitchen – let alone cook in it.

Naomi’s daughter has recently opened a baby daycare. She said it a terrible sight and smell for parents when they drop off their babies, and it is hazardous to the babies.
“It runs from the property’s front yard onto the grass and into the street,” Naomi said.
The family said they have reported the matter to the area’s ward councillor, AfriForum and the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) but the matter has not been resolved yet.
Naomi said they were told by the RWCLM that the house belongs to the municipality and dignitaries stay there when they visit.
“By the look of the place, who would want to stay there? I mean, it’s a beautiful house but it’s deteriorating. It’s starting to look terrible,” Werner, Naomi’s husband said.

She said AfriForum managed to get the RWCLM to go to the house but they told the AfriForum members they could not gain access to the property because they had no keys for the gate.
The Herald reported the matter to the RWCLM and is waiting for feedback.
