Single figure handicap handicapped golfer

Byron Calvert is making strides in the golfing world.

Handicapped? Nope. More like a single figure handicap golfer!

Byron Calvert, 32, a disabled Randfontein golfer, has qualified for the Canon South Africa (SA) Disabled Golf Open as well as the World Cup of Disabled Golf.

Byron has been golfing for the past 17 years and in order to qualify for the SA Team trials and to participate in bigger games, he needed to drop to a single figure handicap.

Byron Calvert went down from being a 14 handicap to a nine, just in time to qualify for the South African Team trials. Photo submitted.

Three months ago he was a 14 handicap. With a lot of hard work and after playing 40 games, he managed to get his handicap down to nine, just in time for the March trials.

During the last week he has been participating in the First Swing Programme Elite Squad training for the SA Disabled Golf Open as well as the World Cup.

Byron has been an inspiration to young golfers in town as well as to the rest of South Africa. He has shown them how to embrace their disabilities and fight their way to the top.

Although Byron is going further than any able-bodied golfer, he is still just a regular guy from Randfontein.

Byron Calvert interesting facts:

He is married to Claire Calvert whom he describes as a supportive and loving wife. Byron is self-employed and does small-scale intensive farming, installs solar power for residences as well as industries and does contract maintenance work on gold mines.

His home club is Zwartkops and his current handicap (after the March trials) is eight. His favourite golfer is Jason Day and his hobbies, of course, include golf.

Interestingly enough, before his leg amputation in 2012, Byron had never played golf.
