The baby was found wrapped in a blanket at about 7.50pm on Monday, 3 April, said Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson.

The man who found the baby was allegedly on his way to a local train station to fetch his wife when he heard the infant crying.

Upon investigation, he discovered the baby with no parent in sight. The man proceeded to contact the Bekkersdal Police as well as Emergency Services.

The baby was later transported to Leratong Hospital by the EMS and an investigation by the police revealed the identity of the child’s biological mother.

“She was arrested shortly after the incident and made a brief court appearance on Wednesday, 5 March,” Lefakane confirmed.

The Bekkersdal station commander, Colonel Mbangwa Nkhwashu, urged his community to report cases of neglect as it is becoming a regular occurrence.

“This must serve as an example to all the mothers who choose to neglect or abandon their children,” he said.
