Man faces charges of perjury

Randfontein man to spend time behind bars for making false report.

A 32-year-old man, who lives in Randfontein, reported a false hijacking case at the Randfontein Police Station on Saturday, 18 March and will now spend time behind bars.

Randfontein Police are warning the community that reporting false cases will not turn out well for them.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson said it is alleged that the man reported a hijacking, which allegedly happened in Westonaria, at the Randfontein Police Station.

“A case docket was registered and the police immediately dispatched a radio message to vehicles on the West Rand to be on the lookout for the alleged hijacked vehicle,” said Ernst.

The police recovered the vehicle shortly afterwards in Westonaria, where it was involved in a collision. Investigations on the scene revealed that the vehicle was never hijacked, but damaged by the owner, who then falsely reported a case of hijacking.

The so-called victim was subsequently arrested and he will face charges of perjury.

“Supplying false statements and lying under oath is a criminal offence. Randfontein residents are again reminded that it will land you in serious trouble,” said Brigadier Jacob Manamela, Randfontein Police station commander.
