VIDEO: Learners get rape and safety crash course

Say "No!" to rape – Police and various other organisations launch rape and safety awareness campaign.

The Bekkersdal Police, in partnership with the Departments of Health, Child Welfare, and Community Safety and others, recently held a rape and safety awareness campaign in Bekkersdal.

The campaign comes after a wave of rapes in Bekkersdal and the greater Westonaria. In Westonaria as a whole, there has been one rape every month since November last year.

The event was held on Friday, 24 March at Ipeleng Primary School. The target audience at the school was made up of Grade 5 and 6 learners. The theme of the event was ‘Know and Love Your Body’.

The aim of the event was to explain to learners when to say “No!”, how to report a rape and to highlight the seriousness of not reporting rape.

Nkgeleng Sehoshe from Child Welfare taught learners the importance of seeking help if it is needed.

Learners were also given a crash course in fire safety and were inspired by talks from the First Bekkersdal Girl Guides.

The fire safety crash course was given by Community Safety. The learners were taught what to do in the event of fire, how to correctly light a gas stove and how to make their own solar-powered lanterns to avoid having to use candles which could lead to fires.

The Bekkersdal Police are planning to have more such campaigns to educate their community at grassroots level about rape. They also feel it important that children of a young age know what to do in an emergency situation, not only while they are children, but also so that they can grow up knowing how to avoid or manage danger.
