Young man, 22 years of age, arrested after he and an accomplice target a store in Randgate with a toy gun.

A 22-year-old man was arrested after he and an accomplice robbed a store in Randgate.

The robbery took place at about 5.25pm on Sunday, 12 March, according to Captain Appel Ernst, the Randfontein Police spokesperson.

The men walked in armed with a knife and firearm while the shopkeeper was serving his clients. One of the suspects held the shopkeeper and his customers at gunpoint while the other, who was carrying the knife, went behind the counter to take a money-filled bag. Both suspects fled on foot after taking the money.

Members of the Randfontein Visible Policing (VISPOL) unit got wind of the robbery and were given a description of the suspects.

Constable Bongani Sibiya later spotted one of the two suspects, and arrested him.

“He was arrested, and in his possession was the bag of money and a toy gun,” Ernst said.

The suspect will appear in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court in due course, Ernst said.

“Quick reaction by our officers secured the arrest, but without the proper description, the suspects would have been able to flee. The community is applauded for its vigilance and the police members for their dedication and efforts. Keep it up!” said Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, the Randfontein station commander.
