#MunicipalMonday: R’fontein ‘dams’ the answer to water shortages

These 'dams' are everywhere you look.

With the recent rains, many of the roads in Randfontein roads have physically fallen apart and filled with water.

The potholes have become so wide and so deep that infrastructure could be built around them to supply the town, as well as the Vaal Dam, with water.

Can you see how alike the two are? They’re both gaping holes filled with water.

Certain Randfontein potholes should be monitored in the way the Vaal and other dams are as they are well on their way to being the same size.

As one man, AndrĆ© Pretorius, so aptly posted in the ‘I lived in Randfontein and survived’ group, we’ve had good rain ā€” last week potholes were 75 per cent full and this week the levels are at 83 per cent.

A previously filled pothole on Desert Street, Helikon Park is now filled with water instead of tar.

While Randfontein can laugh about the number of potholes in the area, it is of great concern that roads lift and potholes lose their filling after the least little bit of rain.

The way in which potholes are repaired, and the kind of materials used, are highly questionable, considering they do not last more than a few weeks and sometimes only a few days.
