RHS again too good on athletics field

Randfontein High School not only won the English schools inter-high athletics meeting in Vereeniging but 100 medals as well.

Randfontein High School (RHS) was crowned the champion of the English schools inter-high athletics meeting for an impressive fourth consecutive year. The event was held at Vereeniging Gimnasium on Saturday, 11 February.

Suncrest High School was the host of this year’s event to which RHS, General Smuts High School, Riverside High School and Phoenix High School were invited.

It was a very long day for the athletes and the team managers. They left Randfontein at 4am with their 150 athletes ready for action. In true #RHSian fashion the early morning did not affect their performance.

Sunette Smith, sport coordinator said team managers and athletes alike were determined to bring the trophy home again, and they did. For the fourth consecutive year the RHS athletes were named the champions of this prestigious athletics meeting, bringing home not only the trophy but also 100 medals – 33 gold, 33 silver and 34 bronze.

Some outstanding performances of the day:

• Itumeleng Sesiko won both the 1 500m and 800m events for boys U/19 in style. In the 800m he crossed the finish line approximately 200 metres ahead of the rest of the field while lapping his opponents in the 1 500m event
