Massive boost for West Rand Black Eagle Project

Black Eagle Project receives a donation from West Rand's Silverstar Casino.

Silverstar Casino, which is based in Krugersdorp on the West Rand, recently presented the Black Eagle Project with a contribution of R50 000 at the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens. The contribution made by Silverstar Casino consists of the coins thrown into the water fountains on the property during 2016.

When the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens were originally opened in 1982, black eagles were found to be nesting on the cliffs next to the Witpoortjie Falls. The Black Eagle Project is a Section 21 non-profit organisation focused on monitoring the black eagles that are still resident in the Botanical Gardens.

The project consists of a committee of seven, and approximately 30 dedicated volunteer members. Over the years, they have proved just how much can be achieved by the voluntary efforts of a passionate team.

Since the casino complex was built on solid environmental principles, the Black Eagle Project offered Silverstar invaluable advice during the construction process.

To honour its commitment to the environment, Silverstar makes an annual contribution to the Black Eagle Project to assist in the preservation of the eagles which naturally inhabit the area surrounding the Silverstar property – more specifically the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens.

Along with the preservation of the Botanical Gardens for the black eagles, one of the main objectives of the project is to educate the public on the breeding cycle of these beautiful birds, in order to ensure they are secure for generations to come.

Gerald Draper, chairperson of the Black Eagle Project said, “Funds are always a limiting factor in the running of small conservation projects, and we are so thankful to Silverstar for helping us achieve our objectives. There is a good chance that the eagles will change the location of their nest this year, and we have been worried that we might have to change the position of our web camera to continue to bring our local and international followers quality viewing during future breeding seasons. Silverstar has always shown its concern for the environment, and has been an incredible sponsor over the years. This latest gesture once again demonstrates their commitment to assisting us to conserve and protect the eagles for future generations to enjoy.”

Shane Collinson, Director of Operations and Complex General Manager said, “Silverstar believes that these eagles should be preserved for generations to come to enjoy and admire. These eagles dwell in their natural habitat, and we should do all we can to preserve it.”

Silverstar Casino has contributed to the Black Eagle Project annually since 2008, demonstrating an undoubted commitment to the preservation of the black eagles and their home.
