Family exposed to human waste almost daily

This Randfontein family has been battling with a blocked drain and human waste for the past six months.

While many families battle to survive, the Daya family in Toekomsrus is battling to breathe.

Doreen Daya, 58, said she lives in Goud Street and has a huge ongoing problem in her back yard where human waste runs out of the drain.

She told the Herald the problem has been going on for more than six months and that she has spoken to various people at the Rand West City Local Municipality without success. She added her daughter and her baby boy, 1, are living with her and that is unhygienic to live like this.

She invited the Herald to inspect her premises on Saturday, 28 January. Human waste could clearly be seen. Mud and newspaper was also found in between the waste.

Doreen’s neighbour, Cathryn Codison, who has lived there for 33 years, added that she employed a worker to close the holes under the pre-cast walls, so that the waste does not run through to her side. However, a small space was still left open so that the waste could run down in a small stream.

“This problem is now costing me money,” she says.

At the time of going to print, the issue was still not resolved.
