Dangerous intersection claims mother

Six collisions have occurred at this intersection, one of which was fatal.

The R41 and Dwarskloof roads running through Wheatlands have become deadly, said a resident.

Stella Boshoff lives near both roads and shared her concerns about the dangers of the roads. Since the beginning of the year, she said, six collisions have taken place around the two roads, one of which was fatal.

The fatal T-bone crash in which a woman was killed and her daughter wound up in a critical condition took place on the R41 on Friday, 20 January.

Boshoff said the intersection at which the crash took place neither has road markings nor a stop sign.

When the Herald visited the scene with her, workers from the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) were busy painting road markings and said they were going to erect a long-needed stop sign.

Boshoff said while there is progress, a life has been lost. “It’s sad that a life needs to be lost before anything can happen,” she said.

She called on officials to consider making the R41-Dwarskloof Road intersection a four-way stop with rumble strips as she said the biggest problem is motorists speeding on the road.

“The speed limit is 60km/h up to a point on this road. Show me a driver adhering to that speed on this road,” Boshoff said.

This particular intersection is a sore point for Boshoff as one of her family members was involved in a crash at the intersection on Sunday, 8 January. She said enough is enough and that something needs to be done.

The Randfontein Traffic Police said they were in the process of compiling a list of recommendations to provincial government as the road falls within its jurisdiction. Now the wait is on to see what will come of the recommendations.
