Police arrest 17 for DUI

Successes to combat drunken driving: 17 arrested in just one day.

The Bekkersdal Police are happy with some of their successes to combat drunken driving over the festive season.

Colonel Mbangwa Nkhwashu, commander of the Bekkersdal Police Station expressed his gratitude to provincial traffic police officers for a job well done during that period.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, the most notable of the successes were on 17 December when 17 drivers were arrested for being under the influence.

During the roadblock, 20 officers under the command of Superintendent Eliah Magalwa targeted motorists driving along the N12 as well as in Bekkersdal itself.

“All arrested suspects were charged and released on bail, pending investigation. The operation made a visible impact as the streets of Bekkersdal were left clean and empty,” Lefakane said.

At the end of the operation, Nkhwashu thanked and congratulated all the officers who had made the arrests and prevented other crimes in his precinct.
