Law enforcement overpowers drug kingpin

Randfontein is home to one of the biggest Airsoft battlegrounds.

Randfontein may seem like a small, quiet town but in the town there is an area called Deadova which drug lords have taken over. However, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) recently sent in their most ruthless team to take them out.

Randfontein is home to one of the biggest Airsoft tactical combat battlefields. The field is located just off the R28 between Randfontein and Krugersdorp and is aptly named the City of Dead.

Airsoft is a sport played with air-guns, usually in a war-game format. The game resembles Paintball but has more realistic-looking weapons and instead of using paintballs to eliminate foes, pellets are used.

The most recent game at the City of Dead was hosted by Airsoft HQ which specialises in Airsoft games and weapons. On Saturday, 3 December various Airsoft enthusiasts took to the battlefield for the war game called Reyes de la Cocaína (Kings of Cocaine). The game is set in Deadova which is supposed to be a small junction town on the United States/ Mexican border.

In the scenario, the town is under the rule of señor Diaz de la Sousa, who is responsible for kidnappings and assassinations. In a bid to take control of the situation, the DEA First Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (Delta Force) went in to take De la Sousa out. However, De la Sousa did not take the attack lying down and amassed a group of international mercenaries to act as his private army.

With De la Sousa armed to the teeth and controlling the town, an unknown number of civilians were taken hostage, thus preventing an all-out military assault. For the players on the day, the situation was a tactical nightmare as an ambush was possible at every turn. In the end, De la Sousa was traded for extradition and protection by the DEA.
