R’fonteiners shine at CGA Awards

Kabelo named Junior Athlete of the Year while other Randfonteiners were honoured at Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) Awards.

Local athlete Kabelo Melamu was voted Junior Athlete of the Year while other Randfonteiners also were honoured at this year’s Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) awards.

This was during a grand CGA Dinner Award gala ceremony held at Gold Reef City Casino in November.

Kabelo, a Mohlakeng-based athlete who runs for KMPG was in fine form throughout 2016 and he was on the podium often. Not only did he receive gold at the Southern Region Championships earlier in the year, he proved his mettle against seasoned and senior athletes at premier events such as the Cape Town and Soweto Marathons (10km), finishing in the Top 5 and winning the junior categories.

But Kabelo was not the only athlete from Rand West to be called to the stage. His team mate and training partner, Keneilwe Sesing as well as Lisa Kellerman, Cornelia Joubert and Sibusiso Nzima – who is from Simunye in Westonaria and represented SA at this year’s Olympic Games in Rio – received awards from CGA for outstanding international performances.

Kabelo’s coach, Motlatsi Sesing said, “We are more than ready for the seniors and are looking forward to the challenge.

Rest assured, Randfontein still has another promising junior in Itumeleng Sesiko from Randfontein High School (RHS).”
