Safety tips for New Year’s Eve celebrations

2017 is just hours away! Here's how to celebrate responsibly.

2017 is just hours away and residents are planning their evening of celebration.

But, with great partying comes great responsibility.

Here are a few tips for making sure you, your friends and family have a safe, pleasant New Year’s Eve

• Stay close to your friends, especially if you’re part of the younger generation. Your friends will back you up if an unpleasant incident happens. They can keep you calm and steer you away from aggressive situations.

• When residents are out having a good time, things can unfortunately get out of control quickly. If you are in a situation where you feel uncomfortable, not in control or vulnerable, there is a good chance that you are not. Get out of the situation as soon as you can.

• Drink responsibly. Many people drink alcohol at New Year’s Eve parties, and while many people drink responsibly, binge drinking (drinking until drunk or intoxicated) is very common among people of all ages.

• Don’t drink or take drugs and drive. This seems like a reasonable thing to say, but even in this day and age, there is still a significant percentage of people who drink to excess and believe they can drive home. If you plan on drinking, always try to organise a designated driver, pre-book a taxi or catch public transport home.
