It’s time the government starts to pay up

Caroline Setsiba has some interesting views, but it’s time that the government starts to pay up.

They have wasted enough tax-payers’ money. We must start a campaign to reduce the size of parliament and the government. There are too many civil servants doing nothing and just receiving a salary each month. One civil servant’s salary can keep four students at varsity per year.

The private sector and businesses are tired of being called upon to pay for what the government and taxes must provide. The private sector and companies’ profits are taxed at 35 per cent by the government and the employees between 20 per cent and 40 per cent and then we still have to pay 14 per cent VAT.

The ‘rich’ people don’t have money, just image. Stand at a petrol pump and watch those guys with the fancy BMWs and Mercs just putting in fuel at R50 or R20 each time.

The possessions – house, car, TV, furniture – belongs to a bank or has been bought on account. The rich people are sitting in government with their ridiculous salaries that is our tax. Cut their salaries to about

R30 000 per month and use the rest for the students.

Attending university is both a privilege and a right, but the students have the responsibility to study and not play around.
