R’fontein knits for a good cause

Ever wondered where your granny slips off to on a Tuesday morning? Lucy de Sousa's knitting and crochet classes, maybe?

Ever wondered where your granny slips off to on a Tuesday morning or why she always carries two sharp objects in her purse?

The reason behind this ‘strange’ behaviour boils down to one thing – Lucy de Sousa’s knitting and crochet classes.

For roughly five years, 69-year-old Lucy, the owner of the Elna Craft Shop has been presenting knitting and crochet classes for women all over Randfontein. Although these classes are free of charge, all the end products are donated to charity.

“More and more people approached me and asked me to teach them how to knit. As the requests were piling up I decided to set out a specific day dedicated to knitting and crochet classes,” Lucy said.

She explained that the class grew so big, she now has two days dedicated to classes.

“I hardly teach anymore as it grew so informal; everyone helps one another and everyone shares their ideas. It became like a get-together where we all just knit and have fun,” she said.

Lucy said she likes to help women take on a hobby, such as knitting or crochet. According to her, it helps them stay busy and avoid any potential downward spirals due to boredom.

“I enjoy helping women stay busy, and this for a good cause. At the age of 20, I fell in love with knitting, and now I have the amazing opportunity to share my hobby with others,” she concluded.

They knit and crochet everything, from blankets to dresses, jerseys and more.

These classes are perfect for any member of the community who would like to take on knitting or crocheting and like to give back through this hobby. These classes are open for anyone to join and take place every Monday and Tuesday from 10am to 1pm at the Elna Craft Shop.
