Randfontein High School (RHS) was the overall winner of the National Schools Debates Competition, which took place on Thursday, 6 October in Johannesburg.
The pupils from the winning team will be jetting off to New York for a trip of a lifetime as part of their reward.
The theme of the debate was how biotechnology can be used to address food security in South Africa. The topic was debated by nine top South African high schools in the final of the 2016 South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (Saasta) debate. The nine competing schools were all provincial finalists from among the 90 schools that competed in the Saasta regional rounds in April.
The debates competition is an annual programme that aims to encourage young people to address the key issues around science and technology their communities face.
The schools that competed are:
• Kimberley Girls High – Northern Cape
• Queens Boys College – Eastern Cape
• Randfontein High School – Gauteng
• Mashising Secondary School – Mpumalanga
• Solvista Secondary School – KZN
• Hentie Cilliers High School – Free State
• Dendron Secondary School – Limpopo
• Cravenby Secondary School – Western Cape
• High School for Girls Potchefstroom – North West
