Forty-one donkeys suffer horrific fate en route to R’fontein

More than 40 donkeys were either killed or hurt while travelling from Limpopo, apparently en route to Randfontein.

A large number of donkeys either died or were seriously injured while being transported in a vehicle travelling from Limpopo apparently on its way to an abattoir in Randfontein, said the National Council of SPCAs in a statement released on Friday 7 October.

According to the statement, 41 donkeys were loaded onto the truck which had slippery metal flooring and makeshift wooden pole side rails. Adult males, females and foals were all in the same compartment, with most of the animals in a state of collapse – crushed, dead or dying.

The truck was eventually intercepted by the Polokwane SPCA personnel.

The NSPCA has expressed its horror at this tragic event. Grace de Lange said, “Humane emergency euthanasia was undertaken to end the suffering of the poor donkeys. The four men in the vehicle, all foreign nationals, were arrested. They were denied bail and appeared in court on 6 October. The case has been postponed to 12 October. The NSPCA has laid charges of animal cruelty against the accused and will oppose the granting of bail.”

An urgent appeal is made for anyone with information of any kind to please contact the NSPCA via nspca@nspca.co.za. You may remain anonymous. Any information you have will help track down those involved in this cruel trade.
