Golf – what the gentleman’s game requires

"Patience, concentration and endurance – key factors to the game of golf," said young golfer.

“Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots but you have to play the ball where it lies,” said Bobby Jones, an American amateur golfer who is said to be one of the most influential figures in the history of the sport.

There are many things one can learn from golf – such as patience, concentration and endurance, to name just a few. These traits became evident when the Herald paid a visit to a local driving range to find a young golfer practising his swing in his free time.

Antonie Keiter, student teacher at Laerskool Randfontein fell in love with golf and has been playing the game since the age of 16.

Firstly, golf requires patience; the patience to acknowledge that your handicap will only drop over a period of months, years even. Antonie exhibits this effortlessly.

Concentration is key to this sport. Not only does this game require a whole lot of concentration to actually hit the ball as a beginner, but it also needs a fair amount of thinking throughout the game.

Lastly, the fine game of golf requires a full order of endurance, for obvious reasons. As Bobby Jones said –you have to play the ball where it lies. And where the ball lies isn’t necessarily where you want it in order to make par. One has to accept every shot and keep going forward.

Antonie portrayed the perfect combination of patience, concentration and endurance to practice ‘the gentleman’s game’.

“I enjoy the game of golf because it allows me to spend time in the open air and keeps me busy,” Antonie said.
